Mobilicity opening in Edmonton, releases two new handsets

Mobilicity's chairman John Bitove welcomed Edmonton to “a new era in wireless,” announcing the launch of its first 3.5G unlimited network outside Toronto and pledging to start bringing down the cost of wireless for Edmontonians.

“No one likes being stuck in an expensive ‘Big Three’ contract. No one likes spending hours on the phone to get a billing error reversed,” he said at the unlimited carrier’s flagship Edmonton store. “Consumers have become so accustomed to being treated badly, many think they have no choice but to accept it. But they don’t – not here, not now, not anymore.”

$10 unlimited data add-on

Mobilicity confirmed that the temperature isn’t the only thing dropping in town – introducing three simple, pay-in-advance unlimited plans and its new market-leading $10 unlimited data add-on. The add-on makes it possible to get unlimited talk, text AND data for as little as $35 a month – unheard of in a country known for having among the highest wireless costs in the developed world.

“Canada’s incumbent carriers have been getting away with highway robbery charging what they have for data,” said Mobilicity President and CEO Dave Dobbin. “When consumers are spending more on data than they are on groceries, there’s something seriously wrong. The good news is change is in the air and affordable, unlimited data has arrived.”

In keeping with its mandate to make data more accessible to a growing number of Canadians, Mobilicity also announced its customers will get free access to popular social sites, like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Bebo and Foursquare through the end of December – regardless of their plan.

Edmontonians will also appreciate Mobilicity’s lineup of popular name-brand handsets and smartphones.  Prices start at $49.99 without a contract and include crowd-pleasers like the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700, BlackBerry® Curve 3G and the Nexus OneTM by GoogleTM AndroidTM 2.2 device.

Today, the carrier announced the upcoming availability of the Motorola Spice, Canada’s only sub-$200 name-brand Android™ 2.1 device, and the $99.99 LG Wink slider phone.

Locations across the Greater Edmonton Area

Edmontonians will be able to purchase Mobilicity phones and plans tomorrow from over 20 local points of distribution, including its corporate store, exclusive Mobilicity dealers,  national retailers and other non-exclusive dealers, as well as online. The carrier will more than double its retail distribution to over 50 locations by the end of the year.
