Videotron  is the first Canadian carrier to enable its customers to place toll-free calls over Wi-Fi to a local number or to Canada in more than a hundred countries1. Videotron’s new Wi-Fi Calling service lets eligible mobile customers2 connect to a Wi-Fi network to make voice calls and send text messages, at home and abroad.

“We are confident that this new generation of mobile voice services will meet our customers’ needs and make their lives easier when they’re travelling and when they’re not,” says Bertrand Hébert, Vice President, Marketing of Videotron. “Videotron is strongly committed to mobile innovation and is constantly testing the technological limits to provide the best possible customer experience.”

Currently, the service can be used on the following devices from Videotron: iPhone 7, 7+, 8, 8+ and X, Samsung S7 and S7 Edge. Other devices will be added in the coming weeks.

Improved wireless coverage
Available almost everywhere, Wi-Fi takes mobile voice services to the next level. Voice over Wi-Fi technology takes over from the mobile network and routes calls in areas where cell coverage is suboptimal, such as basements, tunnels and buildings.

Economical solution for travellers
We estimate that over the past year one out of five Videotron customers have used roaming on their cell phone while travelling abroad. Since June 2016, Videotron customers have, on average, almost quintupled their data usage outside the country, doubled the number of phone calls and sent more text messages.

With the launch of Wi-Fi Calling, Videotron customers travelling in more than 100 countries will be able to text and call Canada or numbers in the other country at no charge and without using an app: customers just place the call or send the text as they normally would.

In the fall of 2017, Videotron also launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service, which provides eligible users3 with improved intra-building coverage and faster call connection. VoLTE calls between Videotron customers deliver unprecedented high-definition (HD) sound quality, directly on the LTE network.
