Schooling in the age of a pandemic requires a lot of video calls. That's why Google wants to improve its Meet app and Zoom to perform better on Chromebooks. The company wants devices to handle video conferences throughout the day while running other apps and software.

It said they "improved how Meet videos are streamed" on Chrome OS" without causing any performance issues with other apps. The company also will allow users to use more advanced features like grid views while making sure "audio and video data don't require unnecessary processing."

Google is also working on Meet so that it can adjust video resolution and frame rate dynamically in response to device performance and network conditions. According to Google, "Meet will now also adapt to the speed of your network by temporarily turning off some video feeds, to make sure you're not interrupted if many people are using your connection at the same time."

As for Zoom, Google engineers are working with the video conferencing app's team to offer similar "service enhancements" on Chromebooks. Google said, "Zoom will adjust video performance based on devices in use and what participants are using their devices to do."
