GM's electric vehicles will lose access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, starting with the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV. Instead, the carmaker's EVs will rely on Android Automotive and its apps. EV owners will get eight years of free Google Assistant and Google Maps without an extra charge. But GM hasn't mentioned what you'll pay to use the features afterward.

GM argues Android Automotive provides more control over the experience. GM teases there will be upcoming driver assistance tech that will be "more tightly coupled" with navigation features. And they won't require a smartphone. But you could expect "subscription revenue opportunities," so there might be features that require a recurring fee.

The carmaker's combustion engine models will still get CarPlay and Android Auto. And existing models won't lose access to these platforms on existing EVs. But GM plans for an all-electric passenger vehicle line by 2035.
