Airbnb announced a stricter policy on Monday, prohibiting indoor security cameras in all listings worldwide. Previously, hosts could use them in common areas with clear disclosure and visible placement, but never in private spaces like bedrooms or bathrooms.

This update aims to simplify the rules and prioritize guest privacy. "Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb," Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, said in a company blog post.

The policy change, developed through consultations with guests, hosts, and privacy experts, is expected to impact a small portion of listings as most currently don't utilize indoor cameras. Hosts with existing cameras have until April 30 for removal. Violations could result in the listing or account removal.

Outdoor security cameras, like doorbells, remain allowed, but their presence and location must be disclosed upfront.
