Starbucks' ambitious foray into the world of blockchain technology is over. The company announced the closure of its Odyssey program, a Web3 rewards system built around collectible non-fungible tokens (NFTs). It'll shut down the beta program on March 31.

Launched in late 2022, Odyssey aimed to gamify the Starbucks Rewards experience by offering members unique NFTs called "Stamps." These Stamps were earned through activities and mini-games. Unlike many brand-driven NFTs, Odyssey seemed focused on fostering community engagement, not just a quick profit. However, the program arrived well past the peak of the NFT craze. And despite efforts to build connections within the Starbucks community, both consumers and brands have largely shifted their focus in 2024.

Starbucks says members won't lose their existing Stamps, which will remain accessible on the Nifty Gateway platform. You need to sign up for Nifty using your Starbucks Rewards email to access them there. The company's dedicated Odyssey marketplace will transition to Nifty as well, allowing members to buy, sell, or transfer their Stamps elsewhere.
