Apple reportedly acquired Datakalab, a Paris-based startup specializing in on-device artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision technology. The acquisition, according to French business magazine Challenges, was finalized in December 2023.
Datakalab focused on creating low-power, efficient deep learning algorithms that run directly on devices. This expertise aligns with Apple's rumored plans to introduce advanced AI features in the upcoming iOS 18.
Prior to the acquisition, Datakalab boasted industry-leading compression techniques for deploying fast, cost-effective, and accurate embedded computer vision solutions. Their website (now defunct) highlighted their commitment to privacy by design, processing public space flow data anonymously and locally on devices. The company even partnered with the French government to implement AI tools for mask detection in Paris' transportation systems during the pandemic.
While neither company has officially confirmed the deal, Challenges reports it was filed with the European Commission in April 2024. Although the founders didn't join Apple, several key employees reportedly made the switch. Datakalab's patents in AI compression and vision technology further add value to the acquisition.
This move suggests Apple is bolstering its AI capabilities for potential applications in areas like Photos, Face ID, and the rumored Vision Pro features expected in future devices.
