Does Disney+ have The Mandalorian's 'Baby Yoda' to thank for these figures?
App analytics firm Apptopia reports that the Disney+ app has been downloaded 22 million times on Android and iOS in the markets the streaming service is currently available in since the launch on November 12. These markets include Canada, the US, the Netherlands, and then followed by Australia and New Zealand. But what we don't know is how many people are paying subscribers or how many people use Disney+ through other platforms such as desktop browsers, gaming consoles, or devices like the Amazon Fire TV.
In a November 25 report, Apptopia claims that 15 million people downloaded the service. So, the latest figure from the app analytics firm takes into account the first month of the service.
According to Apptopia, Disney has brought in US$20 million (around CA$26 million) in revenue from the app, which includes both monthly and yearly subscription fees. In Canada, the monthly payment is $5.99 per month, while the annual fee is $89.99. Based on Apptopia's November 25 report, Disney generated US$5 million (around CA$6.5 million) in revenue in the first two weeks.
You must take note that these are estimates from a third-party company, so Disney's figures might be different. The company doesn't intend to disclose subscriber counts until the release of its next quarterly earnings report, which should come out early in 2020.
Disney has only said so far that 10 million people signed up for the service on its first day, but with a free seven-day trial, it isn't clear if all of these subscribers have kept their subscriptions and are now paying for the service. We also don't know how many people on US-based carrier Verizon took advantage of the free one-year Disney+ member it offered.
