The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) introduced the Qi2 charging standard earlier this year, based on Apple’s MagSafe technology. And the iPhone 15 line is one of the first smartphones to use this new wireless charging method. This is a surprising move from Apple, which usually takes its time to adopt new technologies (although it has supported Qi wireless charging before).

The WPC announced that new wireless iPhone 15 chargers will be available soon, just in time for the holiday season. Several companies, such as Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge, have already revealed their Qi2 products that will work with Apple’s latest devices. More than 100 devices are currently being tested and will be released soon.

Why is Qi2 a big deal? The WPC claims that Qi2 offers faster charging, higher efficiency, and greater convenience. It replaces the old Qi charging standard, which is over 13 years old and needs an update. The Qi2 platform supports 15-watt charging, has foreign object detection, and improved safety features to prevent damage or battery degradation. The main advantage of Qi2, however, is its interoperability. This is a universal standard that should be compatible with all kinds of devices, regardless of where you are in the world. The protocol also allows for charging oddly shaped accessories that don’t fit well on a flat charging pad.

All Qi2 devices will have a distinctive logo for branding purposes, so you can easily identify them and avoid fake chargers.
