The base Apple iPhone 17 receives a minor upgrade from its predecessor. It's also without a Plus sibling this time. One of the significant updates is the addition of ProMotion and improved battery life.
The iPhone 17 features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display, paired with a ProMotion adaptive refresh rate. It gets an aluminum build with a glass rear and front. The display has Ceramic Shield 2 protection, improving its scratch resistance and increasing its anti-reflective properties. The phone is also rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, and you still get the Action Button and Camera Control on the sides.
Its cameras aren't going to be as advanced as the Pro models, but you get a pair of 48-megapixel rear cameras—one is the main and the other an ultrawide. It has access to software features and tools, including Portrait Mode, Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion, Spatial Photos, Photographic Styles, and more.
The primary sensor has an f/1.6 aperture, optical image stabilization, and a virtual 2x "optical-quality" zoom lens, which crops the 48-megapixel image down to a 12-megapixel version. Meanwhile, the ultra wide has a 120-degree field of view and an f/2.2 aperture.
The iPhone 17 has 4K Dolby Vision at 60fps support and Cinematic Mode at 4K Dolby Vision at 30fps. It also gets Dual Capture, Action Mode, Spatial Video, Slo-mo Video, and Macro Video.

Apple upgrades the selfie camera with a new 18-megapixel Center Stage system featuring a "squarer" sensor. The arrangement allows it to switch between portrait and landscape without needing to turn the phone sideways.
Compared with the last generation, the iPhone 17 gets a faster A19 chip and has the N1 wireless networking chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support. It has the second-generation Ultra Wideband, which works with Find My, and access to satellite features. The USB-C port on this smartphone is slightly slower than the iPhone 17 Pro, with its USB 2 speeds.
While Apple doesn't reveal battery capacity, it did mention that the iPhone 17 has finally reached the 30-hour mark for video playback or 27 hours for streaming. It brings it closer to the iPhone 17 Pro's 33 hours of playback and 30 hours if streamed. Of course, you charge via USB-C, but it also supports wireless charging via MagSafe, Qi, and Qi2. You can get a 50% charge within 20 minutes using a 40W adapter on USB-C.
The Apple iPhone 17 is available in Lavender, Sage, Mist Blue, White, and Black, and is sold in two capacities: 256GB and 512GB. Pricing starts at $1,129 in Canada. Pre-orders will start on September 12, with availability starting September 19.
