Disney and OpenAI agreed to a three-year licensing and strategic partnership, making Disney the first major content partner for OpenAI's generative video platform, Sora. The deal allows fans to create short, user-prompted videos featuring over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars (excluding talent likenesses/voices), with a rollout expected in early 2026.

The collaboration includes a $1 billion equity investment from Disney in OpenAI. Disney will also become a major customer, integrating OpenAI's APIs for new Disney+ experiences and deploying ChatGPT internally. The curated fan-generated Sora videos will be streamed directly on Disney+.

Both companies are committed to responsible AI use and strong creative guardrails, prioritizing user safety and creator rights. The deal is subject to the negotiation of definitive agreements and standard closing conditions, including corporate and board approvals.
