Is Apple ready to ditch its controversial MacBook keyboard?

We might be seeing an end to Apple’s controversial butterfly keyboard. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will supposedly be moving to a new scissor-switch design that uses glass fiber reinforcement. The first devices to get the new keyboard include a new MacBook Air coming out this year, followed by a new MacBook Pro scheduled to launch in 2020. It might not make its way to the rumoured 16-inch MacBook Pro or the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Of course, there is no confirmation from Apple as we speak. But it definitely has reasons to switch out the keyboards. The current butterfly keys have had issues regarding these keys acting erratically or completely stop working as dust and other particles find their way into the mechanism. What the new design could offer includes durability as well as better typing experience from “longer key travel.” And the new scissor switch will supposedly be cheaper, but not as cheap as an average laptop keyboard. This new switch might be a bit thicker, but Kuo says “most users can’t tell the difference.” It’ll reportedly be made by Taiwan-based manufacturer Sunrex.

Apple rumoured to be releasing a cheaper MacBook Air later in 2018

There hasn’t been much innovation in the realm of MacBook Air in recent years. But at least in terms of price, Apple reportedly has something up its sleeve, at least if we are to believe the rumours. According to Apple analyst KGI Securities, a cheaper version of the ultra-thin MacBook will be headed our way in the second quarter of the year. There will supposedly be a 13-inch MacBook Air “with a lower price tag,” which is expected to help boost laptop sales for the company. At the moment, the current generation of the MacBook Air’s retail price starts at $1,199.

Apple to reportedly refresh Mac and iPad lineups

Added software support to the Apple Pencil, thinner MacBook Pros, and a standalone 5K monitor are supposedly in Apple’s future. Unnamed sources tell Bloomberg of the possible lineup Apple has in the coming months and year. One is new software and hardware updates for the iPad. Wider operating system support is supposedly in the future for the iPad and the Apple Pencil, which could come out next year. Apple’s stylus will reportedly be able to annotate objects in as many applications as possible across the OS, much like what Samsung has done with its Note devices. In terms of hardware, display technology will be boosted for the iPad for better zooming, panning, and scrolling. A 10.6-inch iPad Pro is supposedly on its way.

Meanwhile, for the Mac line we might see new products as early as October. These include everything from a new iMac with new AMD graphics chips, a new MacBook Air with USB Type-C support, and a thinner MackBook Pro. Aside from that, Apple is supposedly working with LG Electronics to develop a new standalone 5K monitor. Apple is set to unveil new iPhones, a new Apple Watch, and iOS 10 update at its September 7 event in San Francisco.
