New Google Pixel 4 leak fuels hand gesture control rumours

With the number of sensors adorning the front of the Google Pixel 4, it comes as no surprise why the notched display might be disappearing for this version of the Pixel. The newest leaked photos obtained by Ice Universe show the detached bezels of both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. Both feature a large ovoid hole on the right side of the phone that hasn’t been accounted for in the past. This makes us believe that the said space is for the Project Soli radar, which would allow gesture control for this phone. The other holes are said to be for things like dual selfie cameras, central speaker, and face recognition or depth sensor. For now, as with any other leak, we still have to take this information with a grain of salt.

Google Pixel 4 gets spotted out in the wild

There seems to be a pattern of Google Pixel phones being spotted out in public transport. This time around, a 9to5Google reader made out the phone while riding the London Underground. The phone is hidden under a generic case, but the camera sensor arrangement gives it away. What we know about the sensors so far came from a leaked version of the Google Camera app. It has one main sensor, a suspected 16-megapixel telephoto lens, a spectral sensor for sensing gestures, and a flash. Google made the unusual move of showing us official renders of the phone way ahead of its release. The consensus is the phone will be coming out in October, but it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Google decides to release it earlier.

Artist creates renders of the Google Pixel 4

The Pixel 4 is set to come out soon (or at least we expect it to). While Google showed us what the phone could look like in photos, we haven’t seen the phone in full. One artist decided to make renders of the device based on the leaks that have been reported so far. As you can see the back shows the square camera bump with two cameras (regular + tele) and a 3D ToF sensor. In front, you get the weirdly proportioned bezels. The top bezel is thicker than the bottom to house a lot of things including two cameras, an earpiece, and an extra sensor that’s said to be for hand gestures. It also shows the Android Q-style navigation bar. The render shows the phone in the Clearly White colour, but the Pixel 4 is being rumoured to have Just Black and Mint Green options as well.

Teardown of Google Camera app shows what Pixel 4 camera’s hardware could be

We know the Google Pixel 4 is coming. What isn’t clear yet is what the new smartphone will have. We already know that there is a secondary camera on this device, which is a first for a Pixel. But we don’t know what kind of camera it could be. A teardown of the Google Camera app shows what we could expect. Version 6.3 of the app shows changes in the code that reference Sabre, which is Google’s codename for its Super Res Zoom. There are also some new sensor IDs for the camera that weren’t seen in version 6.2 and one of these references a rear telephoto lens, making us believe we’re getting a zoom lens. And that this lens could use Google’s Super Res Zoom to increase zoom distance digitally.

Aside from that, a front-facing IR sensor was seen in the code. This suggests that the Pixel 4 is getting facial recognition. Its presence in the Camera app suggests it could be used for Playmojis or even Google’s take on Apple’s Animoji. The Pixel 4 is slated to come out around October 2019.
