Review: Google Nexus 5X

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

The Nexus 5X would have been the perfect follow-up to the Nexus 5 a year ago and in its current price point. It is still a great and attractive Nexus device in 2015. The list of affordable alternatives, however, is growing more compelling.

Two years after the original Nexus 5 won the hearts of the Android faithful, LG has once again created the ‘everyman’s Nexus’ device. The thin, light and well-seasoned Nexus 5X is an impressive mid-tier smartphone at  CAD $500 unlocked, but is it more attractive than the competition?

CES 2015: Audi and LG show-off smart watch collaboration

One of the highlighted keynotes today was from car maker Audi. During their hour long session they announced in-car partnerships with Android Wear manufacturers LG, Samsung and NVIDIA. Exciting, yes, but it wasn't the subtle Easter egg that caught a sharp journalists eye. No, something else had people talking -- the watch Ulrich Hackenberg had on during the presentation. Bearing a striking resemblence to the in-market LG G Watch R, the yet-to-be-named watch looked strikingly more refined with a stainless steel bezel and leather strap.

The Verge reached out to LG for comment, to which they confirmed that the watch was made specifically for Audi and runs a customized version of Android Wear.

webOS returns to mobile as a smart watch OS

LG has had the good sense to make good use of webOS as a Smart Watch operating system. The once pioneering Palm mobile OS was recently used in LG's Smart TVs and now it seems there's an earnest move to create webOS SmartWatch for developers.

One one hand, it's great to see webOS back in some form but on the other hand, manufacturers spinning off their non Android Wear wearable operating systems (Samsung's got Tizen), means fragmentation in the still-emerging wearable market. This could pose some issues for users and also for developers choosing alliances. This also tells us that manufacturers aren't keen in having Google control the whole ecosystem.

LG triples profits from large HDTV sales, beats out competition

LG is finding success in large screen HDTVs and  claims it now sells more big-screen displays than any other manufacturer with a 27 percent share of the market worldwide. Not only is LG offering a range of sizes, it is spearheading new technologies in the areas of OLED, curved screens and innovative webOS powered smartTV technologies. LG earned 14 trillion won ($13 billion) in total sales, with an operating profit of 504 billion won ($471 million) - that's three times what it managed last year. LG also leads the pack in terms of displays used in devices like smartphones as well as specialized components such as the Retina Display on some MacBook Pros.
