HP launches Spectre XT Ultrabook, starts at $999

In order to celebrate the launch of the Spectre XT Ultrabook, HP Canada held a Wine Pairing event yesterday at the well hidden VIntage Conservatory at 100 Lombard St.,Toronto. The new Spectre is a slimmed down version of the original Spectre. That first Spectre was suited top to bottom in Gorilla Glass but the Spectre XT, which retails for a $999 starting price, is mostly aluminum. Sporting Intel Core i5 processors, an 8-hour battery life and as thin as 14.5 mm and starting at only 3.07 lbs, it is one of the more portable Ultrabooks we've seen to date.

Dell's latest entry in the Ultrabook space challenges all our preconceived notions that thin and light notebooks are fragile and delicate. The Dell XPS 14 is just as thin and while heavier than the competition, feels far more solid and robust than a lot of its Ultrabook Ilk.

Intel announces next generation Ultrabooks

Intel Corp. officially announced the next wave of UItrabook devices powered by 3rd generation Core processors at Computex Taipei 2012. The company also announced agreements with several leading touch panel manufacturers to meet the expected demand for touch-enabled Ultrabook experiences over the next several years.

News highlights include:

  • ·         The next wave of Ultrabook devices powered by 3rd generation Intel Core processors is more responsive and offers enhanced security in a choice of designs.
  • ·         Intel announced agreements with Cando, HannsTouch, TPK and Wintek to ensure capacity of touch technology for the expected growth of touch-enabled Ultrabook convertible designs.
  • ·         New Ultrabook systems offer enhanced security with Intel Anti-Theft technology built in and free, limited-time service subscriptions out of the box from Absolute Software, McAfee, Norton and Intel in select global markets.
  • ·         Bringing the best of Intel technology to mobile devices with three Intel-based smartphones now available  from Lava International (available in India), Lenovo (available in China) and Orange (available in the United Kingdom and France); 20 tablet design wins based on the Intel Atom  SoC, codenamed "Clover Trail," designed for Microsoft  Windows  8.

Acer's Aspire S3 Ultrabook Rocks

Acer is one of the companies outing their new MacBook Air challenging Ultrabooks. The Acer Aspire S3 offers a range of  Intel Corei3, i5 or i7 processor, 4GB of memory and various sizes of SSD drives. Thinner than the Samsung S9 at 17mm at its thickest point, this 1.3kg Ultrabook is great for travel.

The Aspire S3 also features an “Instant On” feature. If the Acer Aspire S3 has been in sleep mode for less than 30 minutes it will resume in under 2 seconds. It will resume from deep sleep in 6 seconds. The unit enters deep sleep state after 30 minutes of no activity and is part of the battery saving measures that allow us to provide up to 50 days battery life.
