VideoLAN developing VLC app for Apple TV

VideoLAN, the team behind VLC app, is making its presence felt on Apple’s ecosystem. According to VideoLAN’s lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the VLC app for Apple TV is still in its early stages but they are making progress with it. “Finally, some code to build VLCKit for the new tvOS was merged. It’s very early though, but we have video playback!”

VLC is an app that lets users play video and audio files in a variety of formats. But they aren’t alone in supporting Apple TV. The company behind Plex, an app that lets you stream files from your computer, also has plans for Apple’s set-top box. We should be hearing more about these in the near future.

Whether you are on iOS, Android, or Windows Phone, VLC media player is making its way to you. The official Android app has been around for a while already and is now out of beta.

This time the iOS version is making a comeback and is said to be up on the App Store again. But it is rolling out by region so just wait a bit if you can’t see it yet. As for Windows Phone, the app is currently available for open beta. If you want a piece of the action, head over to their site to be part of the beta.

VLC to make its comeback again on iTunes next year

It wasn’t really clear why VLC decided to pull its app shortly after iOS 8 was released. Now, it would seem the media player is making a comeback on iTunes App Store in the coming year. Lead developer Felix Paul Kuehne posted on VLC forums that the updated version of the app has been approved by Apple and will be coming back early next year.  There is an existing iTunes Connect holiday shutdown so they can’t post it at the moment. But you just have to wait a bit more and you can get the popular media player app back.

Windows Phone will reportedly get VLC Media Player soon

When we say that Windows Phone users will be getting VLC Media Player soon, it could optimistically out by next week. According to Thomas Nigro, member of the team working on the VLC for Windows Phone app, they hope to release the app by next week. And while we can’t wait for the app’s release, we hope they will work out any kinks first instead of rushing to meet deadlines.
