Microsoft pushes out a fix for Windows 11 screenshot privacy bug

Image: Microsoft

The "aCropalypse" security flaw wasn't just limited to Google. Microsoft started testing a fix for the vulnerability when it was discovered earlier this week. Now, the company rolls out a pair of emergency updates to address the issue affecting the native Windows 10 and 11 screenshot editing apps (Windows 11's Snipping Tool and Windows 10's Snip & Sketch, respectively).

You can manually prompt Windows to patch the app you use by opening the Microsoft Store and clicking on "Library." Then you need to click on "Get Updates." Microsoft recommends all users install the updates. The flaw affected programs like Windows 11's Snipping Tool which wouldn't properly overwrite cropped PNG data. It didn't affect all PNG files, but there was still concern that bad actors could exploit the vulnerability to partially recover edited images. Unfortunately, this won't protect images previously created with Microsoft's screenshot tools.

iPhone 15 Dynamic Island tipped to integrate the proximity sensor

Image: MacRumors

The Dynamic Island isn't going away anytime soon. The Apple iPhone 15 series is expected to bring the controversial notch to all models. But reports are claiming there's going to be a slight change over the iPhone 14 Pro version. Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the proximity sensor will be integrated inside the Dynamic Island area this time instead of sitting below it.

The proximity sensor detects when you hold up a phone to your ear so it shuts off the screen. The position shift might be related to rumours of Face ID improvements. But Kuo said this won't result in any changes to the look or functionality of the Dynamic Island. He said Apple supplier Finisar will move to offer Apple 940nm wavelength proximity sensors instead of the iPhone 14 Pro's 1380nm sensors. This new proximity sensor is supposedly part of a Single Pearl Module with the codename "Sphinx." We expect the Apple iPhone 15 series to debut in September.

Instagram tests full-length Reels replays in Stories

Image: Meta

You might no longer have to leave Instagram Stories to watch the full-length of Reels. The social media platform is testing the ability to watch and share full-length Reel videos at up to one minute. This could be another way Instagram hopes to get more users to engage with the Reels on the platform. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri noted that more people are sharing content in Stories and DMs. And this is one way to keep users engaged in the app and help re-ignite its growth.
