Eye-Fi outs software to help extend life of its old Wi-Fi-connected SD cards

Eye-Fi announced at the start of July that it was ending support for its X2 line of Wi-Fi SD cards so people would upgrade to its Mobi line. But now, the company is offering a barebones solutions for its users who still want to use the older Wi-Fi connected cards. Called Eye-Fi X2 Utility, it’s currently limited to Mac users and has the most basic of features. The software will allow you to transfer images from your PC through Wi-Fi. But that’s it. Also, Eye-Fi won’t be releasing any updates to this software—further emphasizing that they want you to upgrade. The Windows version is said to be in the works but Eye-Fi won’t say if and when they’ll release it.

Google Chrome to start blocking Flash next month

Starting in September, Google Chrome plans to shift the emphasis from Flash to HTML5. Chrome 53 will start block Flash, particularly those kinds that load “behind the scenes,” which can slow down casual browsing. HTML5 is known to be less resource-heavy as well as improve battery life, page loading, and responsiveness across the web.

Come December, Chrome 55 will make HTML5 the default browsing experience. Sites that have Flash-only support will be the only exceptions. But you’ll have the option to enable Flash when you visit. These changes will hopefully result in fewer crashes and hang-ups.

Sony to hold PlayStation event on September 7th in NYC

Next month, Sony will be hosting a PlayStation event, possibly to talk about its new version of the PlayStation 4 console. The event will take place at the PlayStation Theatre in New York City at 3 p.m. ET. While Sony won’t say they’ll be unveiling what’s internally being called as Neo, the company only says it’ll “share details about the PlayStation business.” Speculations surrounding the supposed competition of the Microsoft Xbox One S says the Neo will support 4K games and other media as well as a better processing power to make it work with virtual reality. Sony is set to release its PlayStation-only VR by October and a new console sometime next year.
