Rolls-Royce unveils its own ‘flying taxi’ concept that can be ready to take to the skies in a few years

A concept image of the Rolls-Royce EVTOL craft mid-flight. Image: Rolls-RoyceThe race for the skies surges forward and one of those at the forefront might not be a company you expect. Rolls-Royce, the British automaker more known for its luxury cars, has been involved in the aviation space for as long as it’s been a car manufacturer. It has produced engines of some of the most famous aircraft ever built, including the Supermarine Spitfire fighter of World War II. Now, the company is bringing this expertise into the development of its own prototype electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) vehicle.

Often called the “flying taxi” concept, Rolls-Royce unveiled this vehicle at the Farnborough International Airshow. The EVTOL is being marked for use in everything from private ownership, public transport, logistics, to military use. It makes use of gas turbines to generate electricity for the six propulsors, which is designed specifically with a low-noise profile. By using turbines, it wouldn’t need to be recharged and it can fit into the existing infrastructure such as heliports and airports. This EVTOL can hold five people and travel at speeds of up to 400kph with a range of over 500km. When it reaches cruising height, its wings fold away to reduce drag and cabin noise. Two propellers will help it fly through the air. Rolls-Royce sees this model as being commercially viable by the middle of the next decade.

Here’s a better look at ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’

Aside from the great panels, one of the big things we look forward to when San Diego Comic-Con comes around is the new trailers. One of the big ones shown at this year’s Comic-Con is the latest trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The three-minute trailer shows Magizoologist Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) working with a young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) to try and put a stop to Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) as he wants to lead pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings.

Other cast members you can expect in this sequel include Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, and Zoe Kravitz as Leta Lestrange. David Yates is back in the director’s chair for this second Fantastic Beasts film and J.K. Rowling herself penned this movie’s screenplay as well. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald comes to theatres starting November 16th.

Neil Armstrong’s space artifacts collection goes up for auction

Associated Press

It seems the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong, kept quite a collection with him. And now these are going to be offered for sale in a series of auctions starting November 1st and 2nd in his home state of Ohio. He kept things like the US flag, a United Nations flag, several medallions available exclusively to NASA astronauts, and apparently even the original camera the recorded the moonwalk. Bids for these items can be offered online, by phone, or in person. Other memorabilia going up for sale include a centennial flag from Armstrong’s alma mater, Purdue University, which he took on the Apollo 11 and a Boy Scout cap.

According to his son Mark, Armstrong never told them what to do with his collection. He said, “I don’t think he spent much time thinking about it. He did save all the items, so he obviously felt they were worth saving.” Armstrong passed away in 2012 and his sons felt it was time to deal with these artifacts. Mark Armstrong said, “We felt like the number of people that could help us identify them and give us the historical context was diminishing and that the problem of understanding that context would only get worse over time.”
