Apple Beat: Choices and Decisions

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

I recently posted my reviews for both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. I marvelled at the fact that in 2010, we had one iPad and one iPhone (albeit in different capacities and price points). Fast forward to 2014 and Apple has expanded their iOS device line considerably and there seems to be something for everyone.

Apple posts message from Tim Cook on Privacy

A few years ago, users of Internet services began to realize that when an online service is free, you’re not the customer. You’re the product. But at Apple, we believe a great customer experience shouldn’t come at the expense of your privacy.

Apple has posted a page with a message from CEO Tim Cook pertaining to privacy. A follow up to some of Cook's comments during his lengthy yet meaty interview on Charlie Rose. The gist of the page is that Apple values user's privacy and refuses to monetize it or compromise it in any way.

"I want to be absolutely clear that we have never worked with any government agency from any country to create a backdoor in any of our products or services. We have also never allowed access to our servers. And we never will," Cook states. The website has different sections focusing on how Apple products are designed for privacy of their users, how users have the freedom to manage their information and also US government information requests.

iOS 8 makes kill switch a default option

You know the Activation Lock feature Apple introduced in iOS 7? Now, it’s enabled by default in iOS 8. Activation Lock is Apple’s version of the kill switch. It means you can lock and secure your iPhone remotely if it gets stolen, meaning you turn it into a brick so no one else but you or those who have the password can unlock it. Users are the only one who can enable the kill switch. Mobile carriers, Apple, and law enforcement agencies don’t have access to the system so it guarantees as much security as it can. Of course, you can opt out of this as well. But with smartphone theft pretty rampant, what’s an extra layer of support?
