Google experiments with darker 'dark mode' for Android app

The new dark mode test Google is running on its Android search app isn't the same as the pitch-black dark mode on desktops. The one spotted for the mobile version is darker than the usual dark gray but lighter than pitch black. As The Verge pointed out, this new dark mode could be more attractive for smartphones using OLED displays. It can come in handy to save battery life or give dark mode lovers another option. This new shade is available in Google's latest 13.8 beta version.

Fitbit recalls 1.7 million Ionic smartwatches for burn hazard concerns

I received an email earlier today from Fitbit informing me that the Ionic smartwatch is being recalled. Its lithium-ion batteries can overheat and potentially cause burn injuries on the wearers. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are reports of overheating from at least 115 users in the United States and 59 users internationally. Seventy-eight reported burn injuries in the U.S., including two third-degree burns and four second-degree burns, and 40 internationally.

The devices being voluntarily recalled include Fitbit Ionic Smartwatches sold in slate blue/burnt orange, charcoal/smoke grey, blue-grey/silver-grey, and a special edition co-branded with adidas in ink blue/silver grey. Fitbit wants consumers to stop using the recalled device and get in touch with the company for information about a refund. You can also receive access to a special discount on select Fitbit devices, bands, and services. Fitbit stopped producing the Ionic in 2020. Fitbit sold around 1.7 million units globally.

Apple brings back Beats Pill Plus for Stüssy collab

At the start of the year, Apple quietly discontinued its Beats Pill Plus speaker. But the company is bringing it back through a limited-edition model it created with fashion brand Stüssy. This speaker will only be sold for a limited time. It carries the original design. But it comes with a black with white skull and crossbones motif on the front of the speaker and an engraving on one side that reads, "The only good system is a sound system."

According to the description on Stüssy's website, this Pill Plus combines the "signature Southern California aesthetic with a rich, clear sound field that will improve your listening experience anywhere." It will be sold globally on Stüssy's website on Friday, March 4, at 10AM PST, with a US$185 (around CA$234 converted) price tag.
