Study finds that female-led roles dominate box office

Looks like the myth that female-led movies aren’t going to do well is being debunked by this new study from the Creative Artists Agency and technology company Shift7. They found that films that had female leads earned more than those with male leads. They looked at 350 top box office films from 2014 to 2017 (105 led by women and 245 led by men). The study defines a “female” lead as the woman being listed first in the film’s official press materials. The movies were then divided by five budget levels: under $10 million; $10 million - $30 million; $30 million - $50 million; $50 million - $100 million; and over $100 million. Wonder Woman qualified as one of the top female-led movies during the survey timeframe, earning $821 million worldwide. These movies have also passed the Bechdel test, which stipulates that two female characters have a conversation about something other than a man.

"The truth is that seeing women and girls on screen is not only good for everyone—especially our children—it's also good entertainment and good business," actor Geena Davis, who founded and chairs the research organization the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, said in a statement.

‘Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled’ might not arrive on the Nintendo Switch at the same time as other consoles

Activision has scheduled the release of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled for June 21, 2019 for all platforms. But it looks like Nintendo Switch gamers might have to wait. GoNintendo reported that a number of retailers have taken away the pre-order option for the game’s Switch option—some have even cancelled customer pre-orders. On top of that, the official site for the game now also just displays the words “Coming Soon” when you head to the digital and standard Switch pre-order section. Selecting the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions display the original release date. As for the reason why the game could be delayed, we can’t say yet. But we’d have to wait for official word from Activision when it comes to any updates.

Amazon Echo speakers finally get Apple Music support

We reported at the end of last month that Apple Music support was hitting Amazon Echo speakers. The feature arrives earlier than it was scheduled to come (which was December 17). And now users can head to the Alexa app on iOS or Android to add Apple Music to the list of supported music streaming services. Once you’ve linked your Apple Music account to Alexa, you can even set it as your default streaming service. Apple Music subscribers can then ask Alexa to play songs from their personal playlists, their entire library, or any of the service’s curated playlists or radio stations. Again, we need to emphasize that the feature is currently only available to Echo speakers and not third-party, Alexa-enabled speakers.
