Samsung Canada announced the four winning schools in the 2018 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge. Today, Samsung Canada announced the final four regional winners in its annual Solve for Tomorrow Challenge, a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-based education initiative that seeks to ignite student passion in these subjects. This year, Bernice MacNaughton High School (Moncton, NB), Thornlea Secondary School (Thornhill, ON), Meadows West School (Winnipeg, MB) and Westwood Community High School (Fort McMurray, AB) will each receive $20,000 in Samsung technology as a result of their creative and collaborative STEM solutions to real-world issues facing their communities.

Facebook bundles its ‘On This Day’ updates into new Memories section

Facebook is hoping its new feature will get users to share more personal posts on its site. Called Memories, it revamps the “On This Day” feature a bit and adds some new (or should we say old) stuff into the mix. Aside from On This Day, the section also shows you the friends you’ve made on that day, seasonal or monthly recaps of your memories, and “memories you may have missed” (if you don’t check this section regularly). People who like looking fondly at their past might love this new feature but of course not all memories are pleasant and some might think this could just unearth some horrible past events. If you’re the latter, then it’s best to stay away.

You can access the Memories section on the desktop on the left-hand side menu. Meanwhile, in mobile you can access this through the “More” menu. These throwbacks are also accessible through facebook.com/memories.

‘Dark Souls’ developer teases new Sony PS VR-exclusive ‘Deracine’

A new Sony PlayStation VR-exclusive title is coming from Dark Souls and Bloodborne creator and it doesn’t look like anything it’s done recently. From Software is calling it Deracine (which means uprooted in French) and it’s being described as an evolved adventure game or visual novel. Sony describes it as, “As a spirit summoned by a young girl in a secluded boarding school, the player must prove its existence and build a unique bond with the students through clever interactions. As the mystery of the story unfolds, the spirit must use its ability to manipulate the forces of life and time to change the fate of the pupils.” The game, which was teased at Sony’s E3 keynote, is set to come out this year.

Google boosts offline translation chops of Translate app with AI

Google shows how NMT improves the app's translating capabilities

Google Translate’s latest update brings a boost of intelligence (the artificial kind) when you use it offline. The company is making its previously online-only neural machine translation (NMT) technology available for offline use. What NMT technology does is that it takes a more nuanced approach to translating. It looks at entire phrases instead of using individual words so it can create more precise translations of phrases.

It’ll be coming to 59 languages in the coming days and each language set won’t take up much space as download file sizes are between 35MB and 45MB. You can download these language packs by going to the offline translation settings on the Translate app and tapping on the arrow next to the language you want to download. If you’ve downloaded this in the past, a banner will appear on the home screen to let you know where you can update your offline files.
