Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman to adapt and direct ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ for Netflix

Charlie Kaufman will be taking on his first project with Netflix: a movie adaptation of I’m Thinking of Ending Things. The 2016 bestselling novel is by first-time Canadian author Iain Reid, who will co-produce the film with Kaufman. The Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will be directing this Netflix original film and he will be teaming up again with Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman.

The story follows an unnamed woman, who serves as its narrator, as she tells readers while she’s en route to meet her boyfriend Jake’s parents on their farm that she is suicidal. Before they reach their destination, Jake abandons her and drives off alone. Kaufman himself is quoted in the book’s back cover saying: “An ingeniously twisted nightmare road trip through the fragile psyche of two young lovers. My kind of fun!” There aren’t details yet when we can expect the film but if you’d like to check out the story, it might be time to pick up the book.

Google to roll out the ability to permanently mute websites soon

Around August last year, Google was testing out ways to mute websites that autoplay videos. Now, it looks like the feature is almost ready for primetime. Google will reportedly roll this feature out in the upcoming update. Soon you can just right-click on the tab that autoplays videos and select the option that’ll let you mute the entire site for good. Chrome already has a “mute” option but this was only a temporary fix.

On top of this, Chrome 64 for Windows adds HDR support for Windows users. You will, however, need to upgrade your system to Falls Creator Update already and have an HDR-compatible monitor and graphics card. The newest version of Chrome also protects Mac and Windows users from Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. Google Chrome is disabling the SharedArrayBuffer feature to mitigate against attacks.

CNN shutters Beme after Casey Neistat leaves the company

CNN took a chance with popular YouTuber Casey Neistat and bought his video-sharing app Beme, which he co-created with Matt Hackett. The app was released back in May 2016 but didn’t get a lot of users. Despite this, CNN bought the app for US$25 million back in November 2016 and they wanted Beme’s team new kinds of video for the news organization that would perhaps attract a younger audience to them. But this experiment didn’t seem to gain any traction and in a conversation with Buzzfeed, Neistat admitted he couldn’t turn Beme into the kind of video-centric organization he wanted it to be. He got more engrossed with making videos for his own channel. Now, the Beme team is breaking up and Neistat and Hackett are leaving the company and most of the 22-person team will be rehired in other roles within CNN.

Neistat posted a video that supposedly talked about his departure from CNN but this was quickly taken down. Hackett made a post on Medium talking about the products they developed while they were working for the network. One is Panels, an Android and iOS app that lets users upload video opinions on news items, and another is the unreleased Wire, which is said to be a “machine-learning-powered platform for journalists to cover live news in a world where your smartphone is always closer than your TV remote.” Features from these apps will be integrated into the main CNN app. Beme has its own YouTube channel, which only has 40 videos over its six-month life span. Hackett says this channel will continue to exist under CNN’s digital studios.
