What you need to know about the turquoise light on Mercedes-Benz’s autonomous cars

Mercedes-Benz has invented a new way to signal when its cars use its Drive Pilot autonomous system: a turquoise light. This light—which is added to the existing red, white, and orange lights—is meant to inform other drivers and pedestrians that the car is driving itself.

Drive Pilot is the first software in a production car to be granted a level 3 classification. This means that under certain conditions the driver can take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel.

Apple’s next-gen CarPlay takes over Porsche and Aston Martin dashboards first

Apple unveiled its next-generation wireless CarPlay that will transform the entire dashboard of Porsche and Aston Martin vehicles. The new feature, announced at WWDC 2022, will customize the display according to the automaker’s theme and allow CarPlay to control the vehicle’s functions, such as radio and temperature.

The Porsche version will have a three-dial layout with a houndstooth wallpaper, while the Aston Martin version will have a media display in the center with a green outline. The driving data will come from the car’s sensors, not the iPhone, which will only run the apps. Apple assured that the phone will not store or track the car’s information.

VW and its brands embrace Tesla’s NACS for EV charging

Volkswagen and its subsidiaries Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors are joining the growing list of automakers that support Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for electric vehicles (EVs). Starting in 2025, their EVs will be compatible with both Tesla’s Supercharger network, which has over 15,000 stations, and Electrify America and Canada’s 3,800 DC fast charging outlets. They are also exploring ways to retrofit existing models with NACS adapters.

Tesla’s charging solution is becoming the dominant choice for EVs in North America, as GM, Volvo, Polestar, Mercedes, Honda, BMW, Lucid, and others have also committed to using the NACS soon. ChargePoint and Electrify America are also adding NACS connectors to their EV charging stations by 2025.

Adobe and Figma scrap US$20 billion merger amid antitrust concerns

Adobe and Figma have called off their $20 billion merger deal after facing regulatory hurdles in the UK and EU. Adobe will pay Figma a US$1 billion breakup fee in cash. Adobe had little chance to salvage the deal and get what it wanted from Figma, without giving up some of its own products.
