Panasonic promises to keep up with Tesla Model 3 demand

Panasonic is ready to put in the work and the money to make sure they meet the demand for batteries of the Tesla Model 3. Panasonic is pouring in US$1.6 billion into the Gigafactory needed to for the production of the batteries. The Japanese electronics company promises it will “do [its] best” to speed up investment so Tesla can meet its accelerated production goals. Right now, Tesla plans to make 500,000 cars per year by 2018 instead of 2020.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that Panasonic is willing to spend on this partnership as they also stand to profit from the flood of Model 3 sales. This move also shows a major shift in strategy for Panasonic as this’ll have them moving away from being dependent on the volatile consumer electronics market and into the relatively stable car industry. We can’t say yet if the Model 3 will fare well in the market but this gives Panasonic a way in to the industry.

Bigger troubles lie ahead in ‘Star Trek Beyond’

The newest trailer for the Star Trek Beyond is looking very promising. There’s a tone of uncertainty from Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew take on an enemy that’s unlike anything they have faced before. There’s a lot of tension and a hint of humor that we hope extends to the rest of the movie. Fast & Furious filmmaker Justin Lin takes on the director role from J.J. Abrams in this third film of the reboot series. Paramount is probably hoping he can work his magic on the franchise in the same way he did when he took over the Fast & Furious films. The script is written by Simon Pegg (who plays Montgomery Scott in the series), Doug Jung, Roberto Orci, John D. Payne, and Patrick McKay. It stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Pegg, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin.

The upcoming 'iPhone 7 Plus' might get LG dual-lens camera modules

"iPhone 7 Plus" dual camera design mockup by Feld & Volk

With production issues plaguing Sony, Apple may turn to LG to help manufacture its dual-lens camera modules. According to research analyst Chris Chang from Nomura Securities, Sony may not be able to meet the target quota because of "lower-than-expected" yields and damage to a production facility caused by the earthquate in Kumamoto in April. And so Apple might turn to LG Innotek for the first-wave of orders from Apple.

Chang speculates that the upcoming 5.5-inch iPhones might use dual-lens cameras and will come with optical image stabilization, a feature previously meant for "Plus" devices. The "iPhone 7" and "iPhone 7 Plus" are rumoured to be coming out by the end of September and this camera issue might cause a problem for the launch. Hopefully, this can be resolved quickly.
