Some indie games leave Steam for Epic Games Store

Aside from not launching its popular game Fortnite on Steam, Epic Games is now looking to compete directly against Steam. An attractive incentive that seems to be luring some developers to join them is a new revenue sharing model. Epic will just be taking 12 percent of the revenue as opposed to the industry standard of 30. And it seems this approach is paying off. A couple of indie game developers are following Epic to its new storefront. Coffee Stain Studios confirmed that its game Satisfactory will only be released through Epic. Another is the game Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. Its developer Double Damage is giving the Epic Store a 12-month window before it releases the game on Steam. We won’t be surprised if we hear more from other developers soon. If you want to check out the store, it’s now open with a free game coming every fortnight.

Google Play Store on Android informs users that ‘Fortnite’ won’t be downloadable there

It’s been all over the news how Epic Games will be skipping the Google Play Store when it launches Fortnite: Battle Royale on Android. Now, Google is making sure its users on the platform know they can’t find the game in the Play Store. This is ultimately helpful for users who might accidentally download fraudulent or malicious apps posing as the game. The message “Fortnite Battle Royal [sic] by Epic Games, Inc is not available on Google Play” appears when you search for the words “Fortnite” or “Fortnite Mobile.” Unfortunately, the message only appears when you search for the game on mobile and not when you’re browsing on the web version of the Play Store. We don’t know if Google plans to do this for the other apps as well. But it could be useful to avoid users from getting scammed by fake apps.

Epic Games confirms ‘Fortnite’ will skip Play Store release

We reported a few days ago of rumours that Fortnite: Battle Royale will be coming to Android but not through the Play Store. Now, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed through a Q&A with Eurogamer that this will be the case. The reason for bypassing Google’s app store? To avoid paying Google’s 30 percent distribution fee. Sweeney said the fee is “disproportionate to the cost of services these stores perform, such as payment processing, download bandwidth, and customer service.” And while this move might seem like it could antagonize or create tension between the game developer and Google, Sweeney doesn’t see their decision affecting the relationship with the tech company. He said the company still “looks forward to continued collaboration with Google.”
