Meta is reportedly planning to offer paid blue checkmarks for Facebook, Instagram

Code within the Instagram app suggests Meta is planning to take cues from Elon Musk's Twitter by adding blue checkmarks in its app, which is verification on the social platform that Twitter now charges for. Reverse engineering professional Alessandro Paluzzi spotted a new mention in the codebase of both Facebook and Instagram suggesting it wants to add a "paid blue badge."

Meta has yet to confirm or deny the feature, but if true, it looks like the company is looking for a new way to monetize. It's a baffling source of revenue from a creator's perspective, given verification is crucial for ensuring prominent people or profiles are distinguished from copycats, scammers, and the like. What value would these blue checkmarks bring if people can just pay for them? Since this is hidden within the code, it may not even be released. But it gives us an idea of what Meta might be considering.

Facebook to expand its live chat feature for locked-out users

Facebook has been testing a live chat feature that helps users locked out of their accounts communicate with the company. Guy Rosen, Meta's chief information security officer. said during a recent press call that it has seen "positive results" from the experiment. Canada was part of the initial rollout of the experience in December 2021. Now, Meta is looking to bring this feature to more than 30 countries as part of the expanded experiment.

Instagram brings status updates with new Notes feature

When Instagram's Notes feature started showing up on my app, I was immediately transported to the height of Yahoo! Messenger. But these days, it wants to make the feature a rival to Twitter. The feature has been tested for months, but it looks like Meta found the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the chaos at Twitter.

Notes lets you attach a 60-character status to your profile, which shows up in your Instagram messages. This feature joins Instagram's new BeReal-like feature and its other collaboration tools.

Instagram starts testing its BeReal clone

Instagram hasn't been shy about copying features from its competitors. Aside from its new collab features, the Meta social network has a new Candid Stories feature, recreating BeReal's signature once-a-day posts using both the front and rear cameras on your phone. Instagram is testing the feature in South Africa first.

Similar to BeReal, Instagram's Candid Stories will prompt you to post once a day. You can see your friend's Candids when they post. These will appear in the Stories section of the app. Instagram hasn't elaborated on when this feature gets a wider release, but you'll definitely hear from us when it does go live.
