Microsoft plans to stop production of Surface 3 by December 2016

Microsoft is set to close its doors on its Surface 3 tablet by the end of the year. The tech company plans to stop production of the entry-level 2-in-1, which it first launched in May 2015. According to a statement by Microsoft, “Inventory is now limited and by the end of December 2016, we will no longer manufacture Surface 3 devices.”

We don’t know yet what Microsoft plans to introduce in the hardware space. They currently have the Surface Pro 4, which they launched last October, and the Surface Book laptop. According to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft could be waiting for the next overhaul of Windows 10, which is called Redstone 2 internally, before they introduce new devices. Or they could follow their usual timeline and introduce a new device in the fall.

Make highlight reels with Microsoft Movie Creator

It’s not exactly new but if you wanted a native highlight reel generator on Windows Phone, Microsoft is introducing Movie Creator. Like the others, it’ll let you put together your favorite photos and clips to highlight specific events you want to share with others. You can choose up to 25 videos and images to include in your reels. Microsoft, however, promises there will be more customization features to their app and an easier user experience. It will also be free. The app is now up for beta and can be downloaded for Lumia devices, Surface tablets, and the Lumia 2520.

Lucky Surface RT buyers getting free Touch or Type Covers for a limited time

In a move that should have really happened sooner rather than later, Microsoft is giving buyers of their Surface RT ARM processor-powered tablet free Touch or Type Covers with their purchase. As reported by Cnet, US and Canadian Surface RT buyers who add the keyboards to their orders will not have to pay for them starting May 31. While they indicate a limited time offer, the promo could go on for around a month as per Microsoft's Surface blog. My advice, go for the Type Cover.

One of the most intriguing devices to come out this year, Microsoft’s Surface tablet is Redmond’s answer to the iPad, its big play in the tablet OS space as well as a peek into the future of Windows.

Microsoft’s Surface tablet is the first computing device designed and built by Microsoft. We’ve seen tablets before and we’ve seen notebooks but the Surface exists just within the boundaries of these two types of devices.

Is it as good as or better than tablets or notebooks, or is it just full of compromises. That’s what I tried to find out.
