Windows 11 to get native RAR support

Photo: Tadas Sar / Unsplash

Microsoft Build has heavily focused on many AI-related updates, but the developer conference also made space for a useful one for Windows 11 users: native RAR support. This will let users handle RAR files and other formats like tar, 7-zip, gz, and more without third-party apps. It will also offer better compression functionality than existing apps. The feature will be available soon, but the exact date is not confirmed. We hope it will be fast and easy to use.

Latest Windows 11 preview adds Photo app's 'Gallery' view to File Explorer

It might soon be easier to scan photos in Windows 11's File Explorer. The latest developer preview for the operating system rolls out with a new Gallery feature. You can view the Photos app's image library while browsing files and folders. This shortcut to Gallery comes with the Windows Insider Build 23435. The company is rolling out the feature gradually and won't come to all Dev Channel Insiders immediately. It is still a beta feature that may or may not get a wider release, but we're crossing our fingers that it does.

Microsoft pushes out a fix for Windows 11 screenshot privacy bug

Image: Microsoft

The "aCropalypse" security flaw wasn't just limited to Google. Microsoft started testing a fix for the vulnerability when it was discovered earlier this week. Now, the company rolls out a pair of emergency updates to address the issue affecting the native Windows 10 and 11 screenshot editing apps (Windows 11's Snipping Tool and Windows 10's Snip & Sketch, respectively).

You can manually prompt Windows to patch the app you use by opening the Microsoft Store and clicking on "Library." Then you need to click on "Get Updates." Microsoft recommends all users install the updates. The flaw affected programs like Windows 11's Snipping Tool which wouldn't properly overwrite cropped PNG data. It didn't affect all PNG files, but there was still concern that bad actors could exploit the vulnerability to partially recover edited images. Unfortunately, this won't protect images previously created with Microsoft's screenshot tools.
