Razer introduces limited edition Razer Phone with gold colored logo at the back

Just in time for the Chinese Spring Festival, Razer is unveiling a limited edition version of its first smartphone. This Gold Edition of the Razer Phone features a gold colored logo at the back of the device. This seems to be the only change made to the device and it also retails with the similar US$699.99 price tag. It’s being sold in the U.S. and Hong Kong. Based on what’s on Razer’s site, it comes in classy looking red packaging, too. There is no word on how many units the company is selling but if you want to get your hands on one, you might want to get one as soon as possible.

Razer Phone now supports HDR content on Netflix

If you’re a big Netflix user and own a Razer Phone, you’ll love the latest update rolling out to the device. A new firmware update will take advantage of the device’s HDR10 capabilities and will now let you watch Netflix original shows in HDR, meaning they’re going to look more vivid and have a wider range of colors. On top of that, the update also enables Dolby Digital 5.1 for the Razer Phone’s dual loudspeakers, making this smartphone the first one to support both technologies.

The update also brings with it the latest Android security patch for January 2018, improvements to the camera software, and a new theme store. Since the update is rolling out in stages, it may or may not have gotten to your device just yet so just be patient.

Razer rumoured to be launching the Razer Phone 2 in September, possibly alongside Project Linda

Is this in our immediate future?

Late last year, Razer launched its first entry into the smartphone market and it seems they’re not stopping there. Rumour has it the gaming peripherals company is already planning to release its second smartphone. It’ll supposedly launch in September, which means it could make an appearance at IFA. This information supposedly comes from “an internal source” but, of course, we can’t verify the veracity of the information at the moment.

One interesting thing to note is the possibility that Razer might launch its Project Linda laptop dock alongside the second iteration of the Razer Phone. Of course, that is if the dock becomes more than a concept. It’s said that Razer execs will decide in the next few days where to make this happen. Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan hinted in a Twitter reply to Marques Brownlee (MKBHD on YouTube) that this might be a possibility. For now, we’re keeping our eyes peeled for any confirmation.

Razer CEO explains removal of headphone jack on its first smartphone

A lot of people continue to gripe over the fact that we’re slowly starting to lose the headphone jack port. It seems a big enough issue for Razer’s CEO Min-Liang Tan to comment on. According to Tan, the company had to remove the headphone hack for two main reasons: improve battery capacity by as much as 500mAh as well as provide better thermal performance. It is a device geared towards gamers, both are necessary things.

Tan also added that the Razer Phone comes with an audio adapter that supports 24-bit THX-certified DAC. He also mentions the two Razer headphones the company has released specifically for the phone: the HammerHead and HammerHead BT. The former connects via the USB-C connector, while the latter connects via Bluetooth (which you can see in the photo above).
