Twitter’s stock hits an all-time low

Things aren’t looking good for Twitter. The stock price of the company hit below US$20 per share for the first time in its history. The news comes three days after CEO Jack Dorsey announced the company was exploring a 10,000-character limit instead of the existing 140-character limit. This should allow you to send out tweets of over 1,000 words with spaces between words and punctuation. For comparison, US President John F Kennedy’s inaugural speech was 1,366 words and it’ll be 1.5 times longer than America’s Declaration of Independence. Traders seem to not like the idea, even if there is no word yet if this’ll happen.

It’s going to be a tough road ahead for Dorsey and his team. Recent figures from Statista show Twitter’s user numbers have hit a plateau late last year, even if they’re trying out new ways to get new users. On the same front, Facebook and Instagram users still seem to grow strongly.

Twitter finally updates Mac app

After Twitter has neglected its Mac app for so long, it’s good to see Twitter has kept good on its word to release a newly redesigned app to match its other desktop client, web, and mobile app counterparts. This new version gets features like inline video, animated GIFs, and Notification Center widget support. The look of the new app also works more with the design aesthetic of Mac OS X Yosemite and El Capitan. The app even has a new dark mode to match the dark theme introduced in Yosemite.

It also now supports group messaging, the ability to mute specific accounts, and it supports new quote style for retweeting. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support Twitter’s new poll feature just yet. Let’s hope Twitter continues to update this app and not just make this a one-off thing.

Twitter updates its terms of service to help fight harassment

Twitter is a hotbed of trolls and the company is letting you know they are against this. They’ve updated their terms of service to address harassment more head on. A new section for “hateful conduct” has been added. It reiterates that users can’t threaten or promote violence towards other people based on things like race, gender, ethnicity, etc. And while that’s good move, there still needs to be more action to make sure these trolls don’t malign or threaten anyone on their site.

Twitter to take on trolls in its 10th year

As the social network/microblogging site Twitter enters its 10th year, it promises to clamp down on trolls as they affect the legitimacy of the site in the online news market. Bruce Daisley, Twitter’s European head, said they are committed to cleansing its site as it enters a milestone year. They reportedly plan to introduce measures that will spell out to trolls how their choices affect not just the online but offline world as well. They want victims to expose their abusers and publish their names to help the brand get rid of these trolls and improve their brand.

The company’s value is reportedly only a fraction of that of Facebook at £22bn. Facebook’s is currently valued at £167bn.
