Apple iPhone XR benchmarks show near identical performance to the iPhone XS

Benchmarks are not the be-all and end-all for determining if a phone is worth your time. But it does set some expectations. And all signs point to a positive experience with the more affordable iPhone XR. Packing the same A12 Bionic chip as the iPhone XS, it’s expected the performance was going to be similar. Macworld just shared the benchmark results and it shows that it gets the same performance but from last year’s iPhone X. It even tops the GPU test, which most likely comes from the fewer pixels the phone has to push. It’s also supposedly said to have better battery performance, even when compared to the iPhone 7 Plus (which has roughly the same display size and exact same battery).

Google releases statement regarding RAM management issues of some Pixel 3 phones

One of the problems plaguing the new Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL is related to the phones’ ability to manage its RAM. Reports claim that background apps are being released from the RAM prematurely. One case points out how music players playing in the background unexpectedly stop while taking a couple of photos with the camera. Google has responded to these issues and told 9to5Google that it’ll address the problem “in the coming weeks.” However, it won’t be coming with the November security patch. It’ll most likely arrive with the December one.

Huawei sells in China a protective case that lets you bring the Mate 20 Pro underwater

While the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has IP68 protection for water- and dust-resistance, this isn’t enough to take the phone under water so you can take photos and videos. That’s why the company is selling in China’s Vmall.com a special Diving Case, which will let you use its advertised underwater camera mode. The case is designed to withstand pressure of up to five metres for one hour. It can be brought to the sea as it can be used in salt water. Underwater use is easy with the protruding buttons on the side and its camera mode makes use of an intelligent image processing so it can capture stills and videos sans distortion. The case is being sold for CNY 599 (around CA$110). Unfortunately, there’s no word yet whether it’ll be brought out of China but we’re hoping it would be.

Google to shutter old version of Google Contacts web app by February 2019

Say goodbye to this old look

Google has been working on the redesign of the Google Contacts web app since 2015. Recently, it got the new Material Design-inspired look that’s seen in a slew of Google products. Now, the company is ready to leave the past behind with the new Contacts web app replacing the older version completely by February 2019. This specific announcement will impact G Suite users but it’s also likely to affect the number of Gmail accounts who still use the old design.

Starting November 28, the new Contacts web app will come to all G Suite users (or be force-enabled by the organization’s admin). And then it’ll be the default starting January 15, 2019. Admins will not be able to turn this off then. And then on February 12, 2019, the old version will go away entirely.
