Windows Phone to support bigger devices and smart cases

Windows Phone 8.1 is on its way to add more functionality and features to its platform with an upcoming update. Microsoft has posted developer documents for Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1, a tweak that fills in the gaps for any hardware or software discrepancies. The new update will let manufacturers produce devices with larger screens as it will support 1280x768 resolution for screens as large as 7 inches or 1280x800 for bigger devices with software navigation buttons. The upgrade will also let manufacturers create smart cases ala HTC’s Dot View or LG’s QuickCircle cases.

Other minor updates include higher-quality Bluetooth music with aptX, manufacturer-defined custom lock screens, and high-quality voice over LTE. There is no word yet when this update will arrive but we’d keep an eye out for any updates.

Imoji turns your selfies into emojis

Want to have emojis made entirely out of your silly expressions? Imoji is bringing you that possibility. It turns your selfies or any other shots into textable emojis. It’s a silly concept but would surely break the monotony of the emojis you see out there right now. All you need to do is sign up and choose a photo online or take one yourself. And then you use a Photoshop eraser-like tool to erase the background and then save your emojis. You just need to drag it into the middle of the screen and iMessage it to your unsuspecting friends.  If you don’t want to use your mug, there are a variety of famous faces to choose from as well.

Microsoft unveils Web version of ‘Settlers of Catan’

Fan of the game Settlers of Catan but can’t carry the board game around with you? Microsoft has just co-developed a Web version of the game. And you don’t have to be using Internet Explorer to play the game. Any browser with HTML5 support can run the game. The game is currently in beta so don’t expect it to be polished and perfect.

You currently can’t play with a computer opponent or a random online player. You would need to find and invite at least two other friends to play using Facebook or email. You can take turns asynchronously with time limits so the game keeps going and you can opt to receive email notifications to know if your opponent takes a turn. You can also use the built-in Skype-powered voice chat. There is also an auto-trade and auto-roll feature to help keep the game going.
