Review: Cygnett Apollo Hybrid iPhone 4S case

Cygnett is one of our favourite new accessory makers for iOS devices. We chanced upon them at CES 2012's Showstoppers and they showed us a lot of cool stuff. The Cygnett Apollo Hybrid iPhone 4/4S case offers the protection of a polycarbonate tough case with the low profile of a form fitting rubber case.

The Cygnett Apollo $30.00 is a meticulously crafted case. The exterior is made of tough and scratch resistant polymer which is finished in soft matte. It covers the entire rear of the iPhone 4S and has cutouts for the charging port, the volume on/off button and the headphone jack.

The case feels robust and sturdy and adds very little weight and bulk to the iPhone 4S. Cygnett also includes a screen protector to add another layer of scratch resistance to the iPhone's glass screen. It really the best compromise for users who want tough-case like protection without adding too much bulk.

The Apollo is a hybrid case because it melds rubber with hard plastic. The rubber portion adds grip to the rim of the case surrounding the screen (which is useful in the event that the phone is dropped screen-facing down) and most of the base where the iPhone's dock connector is made of rubber which is what flexes when getting the iPhone in and out of the case

The interior is completely made out of gooved soft rubber that securely wraps around the iPhone 4S and has visible spaces between phone and case that serve as buffers for impact.

During a demo given by Cynett, they demonstrated how scratches on the surface of the Apollo Hybrid Case can be simply rubbed off.

The weakest point of the case is the rubber part at the bottom whcih needs to be flexed to some extent to get the iPhone in and out of the case.

After around three weeks of use, we can see it is starting to feel a little flimsy and loose. But even if this part gets disengaged, the case will be able to protect the iPhone 4S well.
