Olympians want fans to cheer them on with new Pride & Joy app!

By Sonya Davidson

We’re getting excited about the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and here's a fun way for fans across the country to show our athletes some love! Pride & Joy is an app for Canadians to show their support, access daily Olympic activities and keep track of medal standings.

I had a chance to share a bag of Oreos with Pride & Joy spokespeson and three-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Jen Botterill, who will be heading out to Sochi as a CBC commentator. It was a great opportunity to hear her speak about the Olympic spirit and her experience as an athlete who has competed in past games.

“When I was young, I remember watching the Olympics on television and I knew I wanted to be in the Olympics,” said Botterill. “I remember that feeling of pride for my country’s athletes and cheering them on with friends and family.”

Ever wonder how the athletes feel about their cheering fans? According to a recent survey conducted with Canadian Olympians, more than 77% said that hearing their fans cheering and shouting motivates them most when competing. Holding signs of support (73%) and dressing up in red and white (71%) also were great motivators.

“It’s important for Canadians to understand how much athletes appreciate their support,” said Botterill. "Knowing that the fans are there for us and really care makes us proud to represent our country."

The Pride & Joy app will offer real-time updates throughout the Olympic games. There will be chances to win thousands of prizes, including the grand prize of a trip for two to the Men’s Hockey Gold Medal game in Sochi (app must be downloaded by January 24, 2014 to be eligible to enter for the grand prize).

In addition, Mondelez Canada, snack makers of favourites like OREO, mini Chips Ahoy!, Ritz Crackers and Maple Leaf cookies, will donate $1 for every app download to support the Canadian Olympic Foundation (up to $50,000 Cdn).

The Pride & Joy app is available for FREE download through iTunes, Google Play and at PrideandJoy2014.ca
