Robin Williams tops Google Canada’s 2014 trending list

With over two trillion searches done around the world in 2014, what got Canadians talking this year? The passing of Robin Williams had Canadians looking him up and making him the highest-trending search term for the year. The World Cup and Winter Olympics also made it to the Top Trending Searches list. Listed below are some of the highlights of Google Canada’s year in search:

  • Canadians had sports on their mind in 2014 with the World Cup and Winter Olympics making the Top Trending Searches list. Six of the Top Trending Canadians were athletes with Quebec’s Eugenie Bouchard taking the fourth spot.
  • The Cinderella playoff run of the Toronto Raptors earned them the top spot on the Top Trending Canadian Sports Teams list. The Raptors are followed by the playoff-making Montreal Canadiens and buzzworthy Toronto Blue Jays.
  • Aside from Robin Williams, Joan Rivers and Philip Seymour Hoffman topped the Top Trending Celebrities list. They’re followed by Jennifer Lawrence, who had the Internet buzzing over her Oscar nomination, her epic fall on the Oscar red carpet, the release of Mockingjay, and her short-lived relationship with Chris Martin.
  • Queen Elsa reigned supreme at the box office and on the Internet. The mega-hit Frozen topped the Top Trending Movies list. It was followed by sci-fi flicks Interstellar, Divergent, and Godzilla.
  • Mystery, fantasy, and romance ruled the Top Trending TV Shows list. In 2014, Canadians were most curious about True Detective, Game of Thrones, and The Bachelor.
  • Leggings remained a wardrobe staple in 2014 and topped the Top Trending Fashion list. Popular patterns, like Floral and Plaid, and the resurgence of the ‘90s Crop Top also made the list.
  • Our nation’s leader Stephen Harper also leads the Top Trending Federal Politicians list. If search trends are any indication, civic engagement was our minds with How to Vote leading the Top Trending Questions.
  • Canadians were craving comfort in 2014. Searches for classics like Shepherd’s Pie, Rice Krispie Squares, Lasagna, and Meatloaf all made the Top Trending Recipes list.
