How to: Install Netflix on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Netflix has been the one major service that never gave BlackBerry any love. They ignored the PlayBook, even if that doomed tablet had the requisite features to run the streaming service (plus a gorgeous 1024x600  screen and the capability to output video HD video via HDMI-out). With the advent of the BB10 handsets, the Z1, Q10, Z30 and Q5 -Netflix was once more conspicuously missing. Yes, you can get Netflix on a dinky Nintendo 2DS, but still no love for BB10. What's up with that?

Well, that changes today. Here's what you need to do to enjoy your Netflix subscription on your BlackBerry 10 device.

Before you proceed, note that this solution is an unofficial method that is not endorsed by BlackBerry, Amazon or Netflix. Also, because of the nature of this um, solution, there's no guarantee that it will be available or accessible in the near future. It is available now so here we go.

First, make sure your BlackBerry 10 smartphone has the absolute latest software update. We're looking for 10.2.1.537 if you're using a Z30 and Q10 (which are the models I did the install on).

This update is important, it allows the running of Android .APK files without requiring a kludgy conversion. Moreover, it allows for direct download and installation of these files.

Second, make sure you have the options to install software from other or third-party sources, because essentially this is what your are doing.

Once you've installed the update, backup your BlackBerry on your PC or to the cloud, whichever works best. This way you have something to fall back on should anything happen. It is a remote possibility but better safe than sorry.

Download the Amazon App Store App  your device and install it. Once installed, you have the option to directly install many of the available apps in that store including Netflix.

Conversely, you can download the 1Mobile app store, and likewise choose from a selection of apps, including Netflix.

Install Netflix and once installed, sign in to your account and enjoy watching your streaming videos on you BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

Note that this Amazon App Store and and the apps contained therein are designed for the Amazon Kindle, so while they will likely run on your BB10 devce, they haven't been optimized to run on those devices. Mileage will vary and some apps will not work.

I can confirm that Netflix works great with the Z30 abd and really puts that super AMOLED screen to good use.
