Send self-destructing emails with this Chrome extension

Gmail already lets you recall sent emails with its Undo feature. Now, you can even send emails with a self-destruct timer through a Chrome extension called Dmail. If you send sensitive personal information and don’t want it floating around your sent box or your recipient’s inbox, you can set pre-defined timer on your message. You have your pick between an hour, a day, or a week. You can also decide to just delete it manually from your recipient’s inbox with the Revoke Email button you’ll be able to see on sent messages.

The service will work best if the receiver also has the extension but even regular Gmail users can see your messages through a link. Your recipient will be notified once the email “destructs” or gets revoked.

Right now the extension is available as free beta without any signup required but the developers plan to introduce a freemium model in the future. This means some users who won’t pay will get access to some features but others will be more available to paying users. There will be an iOS and Android version coming pretty soon.

The extension was created by the people behind the Delicious bookmarking service. They’ve made use of 256-bit encryption and use a system where the encryption and decryption key won’t end up on Gmail and Dmail servers together. So only you and your receiver can see it.
