Android 8.0 is officially called 'Oreo'

After much speculation, Google is naming Android 8.0 or 'O,' as Oreo. This is the continued tradtions of naming the Android operating systems after tasty treats and the second time Google has appropriated a popular confectioner's brand (the first one was KitKat). Below are more details from Google.

Smart & Seamless

  • Picture-in-picture lets you text, browse the web and read emails while watching a YouTube video (or doing a video chat).
  • Android Instant Apps gives you access to apps without having to download them.
  • Press the notification dots to quickly see what's new, and easily clear them by swiping away.
  • With your permission, Autofill remembers your logins to quickly get you into your favorite apps.

Security: Android O is more secure than ever with Google Play Protect, along with your device's Security status built into Settings front and center.

  • Google Play Protect detects and remove harmful apps ― scanning more than 50 billion apps on 2 billion devices a day.
  • Find My Device makes it easy to remote locate, lock, or wipe on your device.
  • New app install controls and enhanced privacy protections, plus improved security against potentially harmful apps.
*Google Play Protect is fully enabled on all Android devices running version 4.2 or later

Speed: With Android O, you can get started on your favourite tasks quick er than ever, with a faster boot speed when powering up. Up to twice as fast on Pixel, in fact.

Powerful: By limiting the background of activity of less-used apps, Android O lets you spend more time on what’s most important -- while also freeing up memory. Whether you’re talking, playing, working or streaming, you can feel confident about keeping your battery strong.

New ways to express: Share the feels ― plus all the new ones ― with a fully redesigned emoji set, including over 60 new emoji.

Coming to a device near you

  • We're pushing the sources to Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for everyone to access today. Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P builds have entered carrier testing and we expect to start rolling out in phases soon, alongside Pixel C and Nexus Player.
