Apple brings a triple-camera system to the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max

The new iPhones are here. While the front looks familiar, we can't say the same for the back. It's hard to ignore the camera system packed into these phones. (They physically stand out, too.) And that's where a lot of the innovation is anyway.

The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are pretty much the successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. There is the third iPhone 11, which we'll talk about in a separate post. We can lump these two together with the similarity in features.

Both devices now have a new triple camera system at the back. There is a standard, telephoto, and ultra-wide angle lens. All have 12-megapixel sensors, so they promise the same video and photo quality across the board. Speaking of video, it can shoot 4K and slow-motion videos. The standard has f/1.8 aperture, while the telephoto and ultra-wide sensors have f/2.4 aperture. The ultra-wide lens has a 120-degree field of view. Its front-facing camera is now also a 12-megapixel sensor.

In terms of camera software, there will be a Night mode feature finally coming. And a new computational photography feature called "Deep Fusion." This technology will shoot nine photos: four short images, four secondary shots, and one long exposure. It'll then combine these to provide a single final image with more detail and less noise. A new version fo Filmic Pro allows this phone to shoot video from two of the cameras at once. It isn't clear if the default camera app can do the same.

The new Face ID system can unlock the phone faster, and at multiple angles. There is no need to hold it up straight to your face before it unlocks the device for you.

Both phones also sport Apple's latest A13 processor, which the company boasts is its most efficient processor to date. Machine learning is also a big focus here with this chip packed with machine learning controllers across its CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. With better thermals, the A13 promises longer sustained performance for these phones.

Combining the processor with the new Super Retina XDR OLED display, the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro and 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max are said to be 15 percent more battery efficient than the previous generation smartphones. The iPhone 11 Pro promises four extra hours over the iPhone 10s, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max offers five hours more than the iPhone 10s Max.

For the first time, Apple includes the 18W fast charger in the box to help users top up quickly.

The rear panel has a new "surgical grade" stainless steel and glass that's more durable painted over a new PVD coating for a new matte finish. Both units now come in Midnight Green, Gold, Silver, and Space Grey.

The phones are available in 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options.

The iPhone 11 Pro and Prox Max will be available starting September 20th for $1,379 and $1,159, respectively. Pre-orders begin this Friday, September 13th. According to Apple, if you trade in an old phone, you could get the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max for $889 and $1,029, respectively. There are more details on this on Apple's site.
