Apple introduces flagship iPhone 12 Pro, Pro Max

If flagship devices are more your speed, Apple has also introduced the new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max alongside the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. It also has that squared-off design, which marks the handset's first significant redesign since the bezel-less iPhone X was introduced in 2017.

Both phones are bigger than the previous generation Pro smartphones, with the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max being the biggest Apple iPhone to date. But there's still no 120Hz support here, unfortunately. Unlike the aluminum build of the iPhone 12, both come in a stainless steel design available in grey, stainless steel, gold, and blue.

The new Pro models also run on the latest A14 Bionic chip, which powers the refreshed iPad Air. It's the first processor to use a 5nm process, and its new six-core CPU and four-core GPU are said to be the company's fastest ever. Apple claims a performance boost of up to 50 percent faster than any other phone.

Of course, the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max also support 5G, which includes both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G. These phones also have the new tough Ceramic Shield protection.

These new flagships exclusively get a new LIDAR sensor that's seen on the iPad Pro. It allows for additional augmented reality effects and helps with its cameras' low-light capabilities. It can supposedly autofocus in low-light photography up to six times faster, allowing for Night Mode portrait photography, too.

Like last year's models, both have a triple camera setup, with a 12-megapixel wide, telephoto, and ultrawide sensors. The wide camera now comes with a faster f/1.6 aperture, promising 27 percent better low-light performance, while the 52mm focal telephoto gets 4x optical zoom range.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max gets a new 12-megapixel telephoto lens with a 65mm focal length that optically zooms in up to 2.5 times. The wide camera gets a new OIS system, and it has a 47 percent larger sensor, which, combined with the lower aperture, allows for 87 percent better low-light performance.

Apple teased a new AppleProRAW feature coming to both phones later this year. It uses its existing computation photography tech (like Deep Fusion and Smart HDR) and RAW photos' flexibility. The format will be available with all four cameras so you can adjust things like sharpening, colour highlights, and more.

These new phones can also now shoot in HDR video, including direct support for recording Dolby Vision HDR. The clips can even be directly edited from the Photos app.

Both phones are compatible with the new MagSafe wireless chargers and accessories, and they won't have power supplies and wired EarPods in the box either. You will still get the USB Type-C to Lightning cable, though. But we wish Apple would fully commit to the USB-C standard.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 Pro kick off on October 16, while pre-orders for the Pro Max start on November 6. The Pro's starting price is $1,399, while the Pro Max's is at $1,549.
