Google discontinues Pixel 5 a few days after Pixel 5a launch

Source: Google

Two Pixel phones are no longer available on Google's online store, and they might sell out in stores soon. The Pixel 4a and 5 have been discontinued by the company in the US. The Pixel 5 is also sold out on Google's online store here. While some retailers might still have them, those are the only stocks available.

Unsurprisingly, Google discontinued the Pixel 4a. It might be more confusing why it opted to stop selling the Pixel 5, too. But as The Verge pointed out, it might be because the Pixel 5 bears a closer similarity to the Pixel 5a than the upcoming Pixel 6 phones.

The Pixel 5a gets a few upgrades from its predecessor. It has a slightly bigger 6.34-inch 1080p OLED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, a bigger 4,680mAh battery, and an IP67 rating for water resistance. It still uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It will ship with Android 11 and is guaranteed standard three years of platform updates and security patch support.

There are 12.2-megapixel primary and 16-megapixel ultra-wide rear cameras and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. It has a rear fingerprint scanner, headphone jack, and an 18W charger. This Pixel will be the last one to get a charger in the box.

The Google Pixel 5a comes in Mostly Black with four colourful case options. It will be sold in the US and Japan on August 26 for US$449 (around CA$575).
