Apple adds desktop Macs with M1 chips, Studio Display to its self-service repair program

Source: Apple

Apple expands its do-it-yourself repair program to add its Mac desktops with Apple Silicon and the Studio Display. This means Apple users in the US can get parts, tools, and repair manuals for self-service repairs. The program has already expanded to a handful of countries (Canada still isn't included), but the parts for these additions aren't available outside the US for now. The manuals for Mac desktops with Apple Silicon and Studio Display are available online, though.

Meanwhile, the tool kits for Mac desktops and Studio Display can be rented from Apple's self-service repair store for US$49 each and must be returned after seven days. Apple says this program is for users who are "experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices." The "vast majority" of its customers are still advised to visit a "professional repair provider."

Dropbox finally optimizes app for M1 computers

The update was a long time coming, but it's finally here. Dropbox has released version 143.4.4161 of its app to support the Apple Silicon platform, which is the basis of the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max chips. The company says its users don't have to do anything from their end. The update will arrive automatically to their apps.

When an app runs natively on Apple Silicon, it allows them to take full advantage of the M1 chip and its variants. If you're a MacBook user, it uses less power, resulting in longer battery life for your laptops.

Yahoo Mail's iPad app comes to M1-powered Mac

Yahoo has updated its Mail app for the iPhone and iPad to bring it to the M1 Mac. It gets features like Easy Unsubscribe, Quick Reply, and Custom Alerts. Easy Unsubscriber makes it easy to opt-out with a click; Quick Reply offers three short AI-powered suggestions depending on the email received; and Custom Alerts brings you notifications for emails you care about.

This update isn't available on Intel Macs, though, just the M1 machines. And the app is still listed as "Designed for iPad" on the Mac App Store listing.

Adobe Premiere Pro now runs natively on M1 Macs

Source: Adobe

Adobe has just announced that Premiere Pro will natively support M1 Macs. These include the 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, 24-inch iMac, and Mac mini. According to Adobe, Creative Cloud apps like Premiere Pro will run over 80% faster on Apple's M1 Macs when compared to identically configured Intel-based Macs. The video editing app also gets a new Speech to Text feature with an integrated and automated workflow for creating captions and transcriptions.

The company plans to bring native support for the Apple M1 chip to its After Effects app, which will arrive with a public beta later in the year. Other Adobe apps that already run natively on the M1 Macs include Illustrator, InDesign, and Lightroom Classic.
