Google Canada reveals top trending searches in 2016

The internet is definitely the first go-to for our inquiring minds. I'm probably "Googling" at least 10 times each and every day. Today, Google Canada reveals its Year in Search, which tells us about the hottest trends and the year's most significant events based on top searches that are uniquely Canadian. First Google Shop opens today at Best Buy Canada branch in Mississauga

Mississauga, ON -Since Google is now a bona fide consumer electronics and hardware maker, it stands to reason that it needs to show off its wares in physical retails stores. Following the opening of their New York pop-up store, Google has decided to team-up with Best Buy Canada and create flagship Google Shop 'store within a store' locations in three Canadian cities.

Google Canada launches $5M prize to kickstart innovative nonprofits

“We want to make a better world, faster. That’s what this Challenge is designed to do,” said Sam Sebastian, Managing Director, Google Canada. “We have huge expectations for what Canada can deliver through the Google.org Impact Challenge."

Google announced today  that it is bringing the acclaimed Google.org Impact Challenge to Canada for the first time. Google.org Impact Challenge is a nationwide competition to find and fund the most innovative nonprofits that are using technology to make Canada and the world a better place. Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, will award $5 million across 10 organizations to help bring their ideas to life. Five winning organizations will receive $750,000 grants, and five additional finalists will receive $250,000.

TIFF's premiere of LION and how it brings us home

There is much buzz already with the World Premiere of Garth Davis's LION here at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. The first screening apparently received a standing ovation and the trailer is enough to have me go through several tissues. 

The film stars Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) in the lead adult role in the real life story of Saroo Brierley who was separated from his family at four years old in rural India. Based on his book A Long Way Home, Saroo gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of kilometres across India away from his home and family. Saroo learns to survive alone in Kolkata before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple.
