IFTTT decentralizes Google Drive service, splits actions into Docs, Sheets, and Drive

IFTTT (or If This Then That) is an automation platform that works across a variety of services over the internet. You can use it to do things like save Instagram photos to your Google Drive, have it cross-post social media posts on various platforms, turn on the lights at home when it detects you’re in the area, and so much more. A new update coming to the platform though relates more to Google Drive. IFTTT is splitting up its Google Drive “applet” into the more specific Google apps, namely Drive, Sheets, and Docs.

This time, any applet that deals with spreadsheets will become linked to the Sheets channel, same goes for Docs and any created or uploaded document. Meanwhile, any applet that makes use of the file upload action will remain part of Drive. IFTTT is setting up these new services now and warns its users their might be some service interruptions on November 9. Some of you might already see the two new channels and have your applets migrated there.

Microsoft develops IFTTT competitor called Flow

Microsoft wants to help automate your workflow and take on If This Then That (IFTTT) with a new service called Flow. What IFTTT does is automate various popular web services; for example, automatically save Instagram photos your tag into your Dropbox account. For Flow, it wants to do something similar. It connects to services such as Twitter, Slack, Google Drive, Office 365, and Dropbox. Microsoft has different flows you can do like being able to generate SMS alerts for emails, get Slack notifications when a file is uploaded to Dropbox, and create flows to copy files from OneDrive for Business to SharePoint.

It’s available at the moment as a preview and has over 35 services enabled with more coming each week. It currently works for school or work Office 365 accounts or non-Outlook.com email addresses.

Sony partners with IFTTT for Lifelog Channel

IFTTT (If This Then That) is in the business of automating your digital activities so you don’t have to think about them again. For example, when you get tagged on Facebook, it can save the photo to a folder on your Dropbox. The service is putting itself to good use once again with Sony and its Lifelog API.

The two companies are working to build a Lifelog Channel, which will create various triggers for you to automate. The channels available include the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Google Drive, Flickr, and, of course, Sony’s own Lifelog app. Some of the “recipes” you can activate include posting a tweet once you reach a certain calorie goal or keep a log of the calories you’ve burnt on Google Drive.

IFTTT lands on Android

IFTTT (If This Then That) has long been a staple on iOS devices. Now, Android users can automate their apps to perform specific tasks to with the new IFTTT app. The Android version comes with call, notification, SMS, location, device, and photo setting channels specific to the operating system. For example, it will silence your ringer when you connect to your office Wi-Fi. It might be a bit tedious to set this up at the start but imagine the convenience after.
