Captain America almost had a cameo in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’

Marvel

If one of the early drafts of Ant-Man and the Wasp was going to be followed, we would’ve seen the beloved Captain America show up in the movie. But as the film’s director Peyton Reed explained to RadioTimes.com, they wanted the movie to be a standalone film that’s “in its own world” and so cameos were foregone this time around.

Reed explained that in an earlier draft, Captain America would’ve shown up in a flashback scene that Luis (played by Michael Peña) narrates. He was supposed to recap the events of Captain America: Civil War. He said, “Early on, we had a version where we were going to do a quick version of the tarmac fight from Civil War, with some ridiculous thing where, you know, Captain America has Ant-Man as a baseball and throws him. Because the whole thing is Luis’ version of events, right? We came up with all these ridiculous visuals.” Now, we wish we could’ve seen that. Unfortunately, it wasn’t even shot so it’s not even going to be a bonus clip in the DVD.

Marvel unveils ‘Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years’ cover

If you’re a big Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, you’ll want this book in your life. Marvel just unveiled at the San Diego Comic Con the cover of its Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years book. It’s a two-book set that has everything from Iron Man to movies that haven’t even been released yet. It has a special slipcase that features key characters of the MCU (such as Thor, Captain America, Groot, and Spider-Man). The cover of the first book features Iron Man’s first suit and covers the years 2008 to 2013, while the second book features the Infinity Gauntlet and cover the years 2014 to 2018.

The books are co-written by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry and features over 100 interviews with the cast, producers, and directors of the MCU. You can expect to read interviews from the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Chadwick Boseman, Brie Larson, Paul Rudd, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anthony Mackie, to name a few. There are, as mentioned, also features from the sets of Captain Marvel and the 2019 Avengers sequel. The book will cost US$150 and will come out on May 3, 2019, which is the same day the next Avengers film comes out in theatres.

Black Widow’s movie now has a director

Moving on to more definite Marvel news. The standalone Black Widow film has finally gotten its director. The Scarlett Johansson-led film will be directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland (of Lore and Berlin Syndrome fame). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has met with over 70 directors to find the ideal candidate. Hiring a woman to direct the film was said to be a priority and Johansson herself advocated for Shortland. Earlier this year, Marvel hired Jac Schaeffer to write the film’s script. It’s reportedly going to be set before the events of the first Avengers film. No word yet when this movie might come out but it’s definitely long overdue.

The standalone movie won’t be the first female-led Marvel movie to come out, though. That title goes to Captain Marvel, which is one of the two films (the other being Avengers 4) closing out Marvel’s Phase 3. The Phase 4 films are expected to start hitting theatres next year, which we presume is where this movie will be included in.

‘Captain Marvel’ is done filming

With Ant-Man and the Wasp in theatres, the next Marvel film gearing up for its release has finally finished filming. Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck celebrated the occasion with a post on Fleck’s Instagram. It shows the shooting schedule and highlights the date. It reads Friday, July 6th, 2018 and has the text Day 75 of 75 underneath. The caption of the post has the words “We got next…”

Captain Marvel is set in the ‘90s, an era not yet explored by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. She tries to save the planet as we’re caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Captain Marvel is set to hit theatres starting March 8, 2019, which is also International Women’s Day. Something we’re thinking Marvel has done intentionally.
