Microsoft plans to merge OneNote apps by end of 2022

Before the end of next year, Microsoft plans to offer one OneNote app only. There are currently two versions available: one installed with Office and the other with the Windows 10 app available in the Microsoft Store. The company plans to update the app to get features exclusive to the Windows 10 option and give it a visual refresh to fit in with the upcoming Windows 11 update.

This new OneNote app will also access the latest Microsoft pen and ink features and the latest navigational UI layout option. Those using the Office version will just have to wait for the updates to roll out. In comparison, those using the Windows 10 option will get an in-app invite to upgrade once the app is ready. Microsoft plans to send out invites in the second half of 2022, and it advises organizations to use the OneNote app so they won't need to upgrade next year.

Microsoft eases burden of editing embedded files on OneNote for Windows 10

Mike Tholfsen, product manager on the Microsoft EDU team, announces the new feature

Microsoft is about to make the lives of OneNote for Windows 10 users a lot easier. An update that’s coming first to Office Insiders will let users edit an embedded file right in OneNote and save said changes directly back into the document. This means, you no longer have to re-attach an edited file. It takes that extra step out, which we always welcome. As mentioned, it’s currently available to Office Insiders “and beyond” but it should roll out to more users soon.

Microsoft bakes in Android Wear capability of OneNote into main app

Taking one app you’d have to download separately, Microsoft updated its OneNote app on Android to add Android Wear support. The Android Wear version of the app lets users view notes from the wearables and add new ones via voice command. There doesn’t seem to be any difference from the way OneNote Android Wear app worked before, this time, as mentioned, you just don’t have that extra app with you.

Microsoft updates OneNote for iOS and Android

After releasing OneNote for the Mac, Microsoft goes and updates the on iOS and Android. The iOS app is no longer two separate apps for iPhone and iPad. Microsoft consolidated the app. iPad users who relaunch OneNote now will be prompted to redownload the app. This update brings with it the ability to access OneNote from the Notification Center on the iPad (as you can on iPhone). There’s also “recent notes” view and page previews in landscape mode.

Meanwhile, Android version gets the ability to move or copy a note from one notebook or section to another. Both versions of the app get the prerequisite bug fix and performance enhancements. It’s said Microsoft is bringing a significant Android Wear-related update soon.
