Great shows on Netflix to explore and inspire kids this summer break

The school year is pretty much done. My teen has just finished exams and has turned off his alarm clock. The little guy has less than a week left and counting down the days. Both are looking forward to some downtime after a year of hard work and heavy backpacks. They would tell me that they can't wait to do nothing...but we all know that will last about a day until they start asking "what are we doing today?"

Older kid tells us he wants to catch up on some of his favourite shows on Netflix. He's 17 so when I asked him what's on his must-finish-watching list he had mentioned what I had expected: Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why, Mr. D., Brooklyn Nine Nine, and Prison Break. Why these shows? Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why and Mr. D. are situated in a high school environments... #relatable.

Netflix download zones are coming to Ontario cottage country

By Sonya Davidson

Heading up to cottage country or a weekend getaway sounds like bliss. Family bonding time looking for toads, makng s'mores on an open fire, potato salad...it all sounds like a slice of heaven. But the drive in traffic isn't always fun and "are we there yet?" is often MY repeated question on any road trip.

If you have small kids you may be interested in learning that Netflix and Rogers will help with those lengthy drives by offering "Download Zones" across Ontario this summer at various locations. Parents can now download hours of entertainment for the family to enjoy on the drive- all without breaking your data plan.  I think it's also great for those down-times when you just needed a break or on a rainy day.

The new trailer for Marvel's Defenders, which is coming to Netflix on August 18, shows how we get Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist together as a team against The Hand and a big bad played by Sigourney Weaver. Check out some appearances by Misty Fox, Claire Temple, Stick and a boatload of ninjas. This is the culmination of Marvel and Netflix's collaboration that started with Daredevil season 1. Oh, check out the crazy hallway fight scene involving all the Defenders towards the end.

Netflix study reveals shows like '13 Reasons Why' help bridge the conversation gap in families

There's been discussion lately about 13 Reasons Why, a Netflix series that has drawn in a growing viewership amongst teens and parents alike. I recently asked my teen about it. Were his peers watching the show? Indeed they are watching. At a recent gathering of moms at the local coffee shop, the series also popped up in conversation. Half of the group had begun watching. A few had finished the series. The discussion amongst the moms suggested that while it's a hard watch it certainly is one that helps open up uncomfortable conversations with their teens.
