New 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' trailer drops, series to debut on May 27

If you have been waiting for the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series to premiere, you just have a few weeks to wait. In time for Star Wars Day (a.k.a. May the Fourth), Lucasfilm and Disney+ released a new trailer for the series. We get a bit of a conversation between Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) about Luke Skywalker's training as a Jedi. We even get a peek at Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) being put together in this teaser.

This six-part series is set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, filling in some gaps that the prequels and the original trilogy might have missed. Obi-Wan Kenobi will debut with two episodes on May 27.

It might have been a missed opportunity to premiere the new Star Wars series on Disney+. But Obi-Wan Kenobi will be premiered on the same day as A New Hope over at Disney's streaming service. The company shared new poster art for the series debuting on May 25.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has Ewan McGregor reprising his role as the titular character. Hayden Christensen will also reprise his role as Darth Vader. The series will begin with protecting Luke Skywalker following the rise of the Empire. The Mandalorian's Deborah Chow will direct this limited series.

Deborah Chow will direct Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi show

Ewan McGregor will reprise his iconic role as Obi-Wan Kenobi (Lucasfilm)

While the Obi-Wan show on Disney+ still doesn't have an official name or release date, we know now who will be directing the series. Lucasfilm announced that Deborah Chow would be its director. Chow is no stranger to the Star Wars universe. She directed a couple of The Mandalorian episodes, which is another Disney+ show but one that's in post-production with a second season already in the pipeline. Chow has also done episodes for Marvel's Jessica Jones and Iron Fist as well as Amazon Prime's The Man in the High Castle

Is there a ‘Star Wars’ Obi-Wan Kenobi movie in our future?

It’s not exactly a new rumour, but with the untitled Han Solo film now in its final stages, it seems the fixation is moving towards the other possible standalone movies from the Star Wars universe. And the rumour mill this time is saying a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi movie might be in the works, or at least in its very early stages. The Hollywood Reporter claims Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry might be taking the helm for this project. The director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours is reportedly in early talks with Lucasfilm to have him oversee the development and writing of the film.

Lucasfilm has been planning to release more standalone films and it isn’t an unusual thought that we’d get an Obi-Wan film, especially with Alec Guinness even getting an Oscar nomination for taking on the role in the original trilogy. Ewan McGregor took on the role in the prequels. But if they want to take a look at a younger Obi-Wan, he might not be able to reprise the role. We’d just have to wait and see. The wait might be a while, though.
